Rhine River Cruise: The Slow Luxury of Amadeus Riva

admin il 17 August 2026

In the era of mega cruise ships carrying thousands of passengers, choosing a river itinerary aboard a small ship with 158 guests is almost a statement of intent. Less entertainment, less hustle and bustle, more time to observe the landscape. This is the philosophy of Amadeus Riva, a unit of the Austrian company Lüftner Cruises, specializing in high-end river cruises on the Rhine and other major European waterways.

Unlike large ocean liners, there are no shows, casinos, shops, or continuous attractions here. The day follows a different rhythm: breakfast, excursions, reading on deck, slow navigation, and early dinners. An experience that requires a change of perspective: you don’t travel to fill every minute, but to make space for anticipation.

A Boutique Hotel on the River

Inaugurated in 2023, Amadeus Riva represents a new generation of river ships. With four decks, 67 cabins, a restaurant, a panoramic lounge, a small gym, and the Sun Deck with river views, it focuses on discreet luxury, closer to that of a boutique hotel than to traditional large cruises.

The suites are modern and bright, with well-appointed interiors and large windows overlooking the water. The service is attentive but never intrusive, consistent with a clientele seeking tranquility rather than entertainment.

Lüftner Cruises, represented in Italy by Gioco Viaggi, is investing heavily in this segment: the fleet’s new ships are introducing elements increasingly akin to the world of luxury maritime cruises, such as swimming pools and larger common areas.

The Journey on the Rhine and Moselle

The original itinerary (the cruise was scheduled from July 20 to 27) included stops between the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland, but the exceptionally low water level of the Rhine necessitated a change of route. The second part of the navigation was replaced by a detour on the Moselle, with stops in locations such as Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues, Koblenz, and Trier.

This incident serves as a reminder of a fundamental rule of cruises: no itinerary is 100% guaranteed. Safety and environmental conditions always take precedence over initial plans.

Despite the change of course, the charm of the journey remained undiminished. From the ship’s deck, we admired medieval castles, terraced vineyards, suspension bridges, and historic villas.

Who is a River Cruise For?

Guests on board are mainly mature couples from Germany, Austria, and the United States, but there are also families, groups of friends, and solo travelers. Italians remain a marginal presence, partly due to some cultural barriers: the prevalent language is English or German, the model is less known compared to Mediterranean cruises, and the dining follows more Northern European logic, without permanent buffets.

The price also deserves consideration. A week on Amadeus Riva can cost approximately between 1,500 and 3,000 euros per person, figures not too far from many mid-to-high-end maritime cruises. So why not, at least once in a lifetime, try a cruise different from the classic Mediterranean navigation?
