MSC Group breaks ground on Sandy Cay, the new private destination in the Bahamas

The MSC Group celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for Sandy Cay, the group’s new private island destination in The Bahamas located near Ocean Cay. The event was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group, and Philip Davis, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, along with representatives from the local government and project partners. Construction and site preparation are already well underway, with the official opening scheduled for 2028.

First announced in April 2026, the new island is located next to the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and will be exclusively developed for guests of MSC Cruises ships and the luxury brand Explora Journeys. The project aims to complement the main island’s offering by providing a more intimate and exclusive atmosphere, focused on wellness and relaxation. Development plans include private beaches, dedicated dining venues, relaxation areas, private cabanas, and tailor-made experiences.

Concurrently with the work on Sandy Cay, the group has also confirmed a series of modernization and enhancement interventions for Ocean Cay. New features for the marine reserve will include a wider selection of restaurants, new beach concepts differentiated for families and adults-only, expanded relaxation areas, and new activities related to the island’s marine conservation projects.

The two destinations will operate independently and maintain distinct identities, offering MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys travelers a dual option for private stops in the heart of The Bahamas. The integration between the two islands will further diversify onshore experiences during the group’s Caribbean itineraries.
