Ticketcrociere Observatory: a weekly luxury cruise costs an average of 5,000 euros. Explora Journeys leads the “Young Luxury” revolution.

Luxury cruising is getting younger. The latest analysis from the Ticketcrociere Observatory, conducted on booking data collected from January to September 2026 for trips departing within the 2026-2028 three-year period, highlights the first signs of a sector transformation: the market is no longer governed solely by historic companies and their over-65 cruisers, but is welcoming a new onboard “class”, that of under-50s, previously a rarity on this type of ship.

Explora Journeys Lowers the Average Age by Embracing Lifestyle and Informal Luxury
The disruptive element is represented by the market entry of Explora Journeys, which alone captures 56.34% of bookings made on Ticketcrociere in the first nine months of the year.
Driving the success of MSC Group’s luxury ocean travel brand – which recently announced its entry into river cruising – is its ability to attract a new target audience for the sector: with an average embarkation age of 49.3 years, Explora Journeys can today be considered the benchmark for so-called “Young Luxury”. The remainder of the bookings made on Ticketcrociere are distributed among the veteran companies in this market: Silversea stands as the second operator by passenger share with 16.90% of bookings and an average age of 54.2 years, followed by Seabourn, with 14.08% of bookings and an average age of 62.9 years. Further behind and targeting a senior audience are Oceania Cruises, which accounts for 8.45% of passengers with an average age of 73.2 years, and Ponant, which accounts for 4.23% of choices with an average age of 67.7 years.

“Explora Journeys represented a small tsunami for the luxury cruise sector, stirring waters that were considered calm until a handful of years ago,” explains Matteo Lorusso, general director of Ticketcrociere. “The brand possesses numerous tools, from its new fleet of ships to substantial investments in advertising that boost sales in Italy, as well as the selection of top-level executives from luxury multinationals who have brought 5-star hotel standards on board. The positioning is also clear: naming Jannik Sinner as Brand Ambassador indicates a distinct desire to target a younger audience, attentive to self-care yet relaxed and smart.”

How much does it cost to travel for a week on a luxury ship?
The analysis of transactions reveals that an all-inclusive week aboard Explora Journeys ships costs an average of 5,200 euros, compared to 3,600 euros for Silversea: these two companies are the only ones to boast bookings made on Ticketcrociere spanning the entire three-year period.
To board Oceania Cruises ships (bookings referring only to 2026) and Ponant (2027), one spends respectively 2,400 euros and 5,200 euros. Seabourn is an outlier: for 2027 only, the American company registers an average ticket price of 9,800 euros per person.

Who are Luxury Cruisers, Where Do They Travel, and When Do They Book
7.5 out of 10 luxury passengers are couples, 1.55 are families with children. Single travelers account for 1 out of 10 and include both “hedonists” – professionals and managers who can work remotely – and “silver solo travelers,” meaning widows or mature individuals who wish to continue traveling with maximum comfort and organizational security. Further confirmation comes from destination choices: the preferred routes remain the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, which are booked on average one year before departures, concentrated in winter and August.

The Future of Luxury Cruising
The rise of Explora Journeys – the only luxury cruise brand with Italian DNA – has triggered an “arms race” among the sector’s historic brands. The American Crystal Cruises, not included in these surveys, recently commissioned a third ship that will become operational in 2028, 25 years after the inauguration of its second vessel, Crystal Serenity. Silversea – another American competitor that recently hosted actress Nicole Kidman on board – has introduced new fares, reorganized suite categories, and ordered two new expedition ships, which will bring its fleet to 14 vessels.

Ponant has acquired a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions to expand into luxury river cruises in the Amazon and Mekong; concurrently, the French company has completed the restyling of the m/s Paul Gauguin to strengthen its presence in Polynesia. Already by 2027, the American Oceania Cruises will make two new units, Oceania Aurelia and Oceania Sonata, available to the market; another three sister ships will complete the new Sonata Class line through a succession of deliveries by 2037.

“The growth of this segment, though niche, is remarkable: for us, the luxury share accounts for around 15% of our turnover. The entire sector is moving: demand is increasing, and sales are consequently rising. Three years ago, the Italian ports where luxury ships docked were 35; today, there are 70, including unprecedented stops like Crotone and Monopoli,” concludes Lorusso.
