The extra-luxury ships commissioned by MSC Cruises in Sestri Ponente shipyard of Fincantieri will be built in Genoa. The news came from the Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises Pierfrancesco Vago who participated in a summit of the Liguria Region.
The market segment of ultra-luxury cruise is rapidly expanding in the Mediterranean. “We will make the prototype in the factories in Monfalcone, but the others will be built in Genoa,” Vago announced.
The agreement with Fincantieri has a value of about 1.5 billion euros to build four units and each with 64 thousand gross tonnage and 481 cabins.
The final contracts between the two parties were signed in March, after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the parties since last October and the entry permit for the luxury market to MSC. So far, the company has dedicated the MSC Yacht Club to the segment which is a luxury experience on board ships considered as “a ship inside the ship”. Now the ships totally dedicated to luxury will also arrive.
The first of the four units to be built by the leading shipbuilding group will be delivered in 2023; the other three will enter into service each successive year in the following three years up to 2026. They will be avant-garde ships with the latest technologies, innovations and solutions to guarantee relaxation and comfort for passengers. With the ever increasing attention to the environment, they will be designed to minimize the impact. There is a great curiosity about the announced innovative design of the units that will take shape in the Sestri Ponente shipbuilding basins.
Due to the growing trend of the luxury sector, it is said that MSC Cruises could add two more units to the order for Fincantieri. The news is not yet official, but if the order to be settled with two more ships will also be built in the Genoa factories.
